Bicycle Mechanic and Machine Shop Operator

Working as a bicycle mechanic taught me how to execute technical work quickly and accurately under real-world constraints. In busy shop environments, I learned to diagnose problems efficiently, perform precise mechanical repairs, and deliver reliable results on tight timelines. Beyond the technical skills, I gained experience working directly with customers—explaining problems clearly, recommending solutions, and balancing engineering judgment with practicality and cost. This environment reinforced the importance of craftsmanship, communication, and accountability in hands-on engineering work.

I also worked at the UW–Madison College of Engineering student machine shop, where I received permits and hands-on training in the mill, lathe, CNC machining, welding, and wood shop. I regularly supported other students by helping them translate design ideas into manufacturable parts, advising on fabrication methods, tolerances, and material choices. I also taught wood shop classes, reinforcing safe practices and fundamental fabrication skills.

In addition, I was deeply involved in the UW–Madison makerspaces, with a strong focus on 3D printing and CAD design in SolidWorks. I frequently modeled parts to support rapid prototyping and iteration, using digital design as a bridge between concept and physical fabrication.
