Rebuilding Bikes: Learning Engineering Through Iteration

I enjoy rebuilding old bicycles as a way to study engineering evolution in its most tangible form. Working on bikes from different eras reveals how design decisions have changed over time—how braking systems improved, shifter placements evolved, materials shifted, and frame geometries adapted to performance, safety, and user needs. Rebuilding vintage bikes has been one of the most effective ways for me to learn core engineering principles through hands-on problem solving and iterative repair. Each rebuild teaches me something new about mechanical systems, constraints, and tradeoffs. One of my favorite projects was restoring an old-school Raleigh, a process that was both technically rewarding and deeply satisfying, and remains one of my favorite bikes to ride.
